ARTIST BIO

Nice to meet you.

name: Ria

age: 22

born: april 13, 1998

major: neuroscience at CU Boulder

I began drawing from the moment I could hold a pencil, and everything cultivated from there. I am self-taught, and most of what I have gained in experience is from practicing when time allows and whenever the inspiration strikes.

My art is focused on drawing people and capturing their expressions, likenesses and characters. I try to take a spin on portraits by incorporating a cartoon style and strong lines, and coloring with bright, contrasting colors. I really try to have fun when portraying an individual’s character in drawing, especially with their eyes and lips. The process will typically begin by choosing a real photo reference, sketching a general outline on paper, and deciding on the subject’s proportions. From here, I focus on my favorite part, which is taking apart the subject’s features, (ex: round tall eyes, wide slit eyes, sharp jaw, low round cheek bones) and reworking them into a simplified yet aesthetically pleasing style. In the end, my goal is always to have the original individual as recognizable as possible, no matter how deviated from reality. My main mediums are traditional graphite and Procreate on an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil.

Making portraits has become such an important pastime for me and I am always looking to develop my style to be more expressive every day. While my future is far from certain, I would love the opportunity to incorporate digital art and design into my career path!
